Overexposed

Overexposed 2023

Photoseries of 5, silver gelatin print on baryta paper 38x48cm, nails

The photo series Overexposed is a sequence of analogue self-portraits, in which separate, overlapping moments have been captured in a single image. The series aims to give a tangible impression of the abstract concept of ‘sensory overload’ or being overexposed.

“Seemingly calm on the outside, it can be a whirlwind of images and sensations on the inside. By picking up the camera at such a moment and trying to capture that feeling, peace slowly returns due to the concentration, time and attention that the analogue process requires. For me it was like a ritual that creates order out of chaos. For this series I made dozens of multi exposures, (multiple exposures) in which several photos are taken on one negative. The choice for analogy photography is a substantive choice, after all the material itself is as sensitive to stimuli as I am. The more images there are on the negative, the more abstract or ambiguous the image becomes.”

This work is part of the exhibition PRIKKEL (STIMULUS) until January 7th 2024  at Buitenplaats Doornburgh, a museum where art and science collide. PRIKKEL is an exhibition about the complexity of today’s society, about ‘sensory overload’ and how we adapt to it.
